About

when-awake is a map for seeing where in the world it is daytime, and what time it is. You can tell when someone far away is awake without doing the timezone math.

How to use

On the world map, open a country to see its local time. Land is colored by solar elevation, shifting from daytime brightness through evening orange, morning gold, and night. The gold sun marks where it is noon right now.

Opening a country shows first-level administrative divisions (states, prefectures, and the like). Land color follows the sun, as on the world map. If the country has more than one time zone, hover a region to see its local time. If it does not, the country’s time appears at the bottom right.

Data

Borders and subdivisions use public-domain Natural Earth data. Times are computed in your browser from IANA time zones.

Borders and administrative divisions are shown for convenience and do not represent a claim of sovereignty.
